“I always give our clients a clear understanding of the options available,” explains Silberfein, who has practiced law for more than 40 years. “They get an overview of the law, an explanation of what should happen, and my assessment of possible obstacles, and I estimate the time and expense of each phase, so that I can eliminate most of the surprises. I strategize with the client at the beginning in terms of goals, what my client needs to accomplish, and the fastest way to get there — whether that’s by negotiation or litigation.”

Part of my job is to dampen the fires so that the case isn’t as hotly contested. If we can reach a reasonably fast, fair settlement, then the parties can walk away with their dignity and finances intact.” Silberfein has a history of settling difficult cases due to his strong negotiating skills. “It takes four people to settle a matrimonial case,” he says, referring to the two parties and their lawyers, “but only one to keep the case going. To resolve it reasonably, you must work well with the opposing counsel.” But if the “other side” makes peaceful negotiation impossible, Silberfein will bring his years of experience as a litigator to court to “make sure that ‘hard-ball tactics’ by an adversary does not work to my client’s disadvantage.”
